Highly Defined: New Works from the Voom HD Lab (Program 1) October 17, 2007

In 2004, Voom, a network of television channels aired in the 1080i format, initiated a residency program, giving artists access to the full breadth of HD technology. The variety of outcomes is stupendous, with fictive fantasies, quirky essays, performative portraits, and abstract image extravaganzas all sharing a common characteristic, a pixel count that would have seemed absurd just a few years ago.

From Jennifer Reeves's hand-tooled optical ecstasy Light Work 1 to Fred Barney Taylor's Atlantis, a tantalizing treatment of the Brooklyn Bridge; from Ellen Zweig's pungent portrait of a Chinese opera star, The Lonely Girl, to Leighton Pierce's defined dive beneath the surface, My Person in the Water, now with deeper ridges to the roil, we can observe the medium magnified in its particular materiality of tone and depth.
