Roger Shultz from “The Biggest Loser” and Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford to Speak at Event to Support Early Detection and Management of Diabetes
Birmingham, Ala., August 5, 2009— Health Across America: Pharmacists Partnering in Diabetes Care, a national campaign that is mobilizing more than 2,000 locally-owned community pharmacies in as many as 60 communities around the country this summer, will be at Linn Park on Wednesday, August 5.

Roger Shultz from “The Biggest Loser” and Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford will attend the event and be available to comment about the opportunities local citizens have to work with their pharmacists to better manage the condition, save costs, and stay healthy.

In response to this national campaign, the city of Birmingham in conjunction with the Mayor’s office will proclaim August 5, 2009 as Pharmacists Partnering in Diabetes Care Day.
The Birmingham event will offer FREE diabetes screenings and the opportunity to talk to pharmacists about the condition and leading a healthier lifestyle, in addition to free food for the first 200 attendees.

Why: The Health Across America campaign has screened more than 4,000 patients and diagnosed more than 1,000 patients who are at risk for diabetes. In Birmingham, nearly nine percent of the population has diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the U.S., more than 24 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, and another 57 million people are likely to develop the condition if they don’t alter their living habits, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Where: The Health Across America mobile screening unit will be at Linn Park at 710 20th St. N., Birmingham, AL. The event will be held in the park across from the City Hall.

When: Wednesday, August 5 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
