The trio of young authors reading tonight represents some of the most brilliant voices in contemporary bleakness. Samantha Hunt's first novel, The Seas, finds a thwarted mermaid yearning for love in a dead-end town. Tom Bissell keeps his characters preoccupied by thoughts of home in God Lives in St. Petersburg, a sharp meditation on the perils of foreign lands and alienation. David Rees, whose comic strip Get Your War On has just been compiled into a second collection, softens his incisive and convincing excoriations of Bush's foreign policy with sly humor. That the reading is part of the Happy Ending series might just be another ironic flourish in a darkly intelligent evening.
