Escape Routes: Experiencing the Opening of the Berlin Wall and the End of an Era

In conjunction with The Wall Project, a series of events in Los Angeles commemorating the 20-year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, former U.S. ambassador to the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Richard Barkley, and Academy Award-winning director Florian von Donnersmarck discuss the dramatic events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent finals days of the GDR. Barkley served as ambassador from 1988-1990. Donnersmark is a German director and screenwriter; his first feature film Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) won the 2007 Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.
