Hallifax & Jeffrey (with guests) play music for Lyra Viol January 21, 2011

Barefoot Chamber Concerts continues its mission to help you start the weekend right. This Friday evening concert series offers great music in a relaxed setting. The series is committed to musical excellence without the formality of the conventional concert setting. Concerts start at 6 p.m. and last 60-75 minutes without intermission. Light refreshments are available, and there will be ample time to move on to other evening entertainments.

On Friday January 21, 2011 Barefoot will present Hallifax & Jeffrey (Peter Hallifax and Jule Jeffrey) with guest violists Marie Dalby and Tobi Szuts, playing a concert of English music for "lyra viols."

A specialty of English 17th century composers, music for "lyra viols" (viols tuned in a variety of unconventional ways, giving opportunities for unusually rich chordal writing) is rarely performed; most of this concert will have never been heard before live on the West Coast, although all the leading composers of the time wrote lyra viol music.

Violists Hallifax & Jeffrey, well known for their performances of French high baroque music and English 17th century viol music, are joined by Marie Dalby and Tobi Szuts (of "Quaver" fame), in a program that brings this unique and rich music back to life. Composers include Hume, Ferrabosco, Corkine, Ford, Coprario, and more.

At this period in history composers were still experimenting with instrumental chamber music. The results are as varied as they are masterly. The Tudor courts had given rise to a rich tradition of music composition and performance, and subsequently England in the 17th century became the international center for viol making, playing, and composition.

The "lyra viol" repertoire is a unique and fabulous product of this exciting time in English musical history.
