A week long festival of new works by women featuring 6 current and exciting plays from our Playwrights Unit Commissions, 6 scripts fresh from our Write from the Hip young writers program and a new crisp collective from our teen program Busting Out!
The Groundswell Festival is a nationally recognized forum for the creation and development of theatre by women. The festival boasts impressive alumnae including Morwyn Brebner, Alex Bulmer, Marjorie Chan, Claudia Dey, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Celia McBride, Monique Mojica, Sonja Mills, Djanet Sears and Jean Yoon. This year’s playwrights were selected from over 150 submissions from across the country. The playwrights met from January to August as part of the Groundswell Playwrights Unit. They received ongoing dramaturgical support from Artistic Director Kelly Thornton and Interim Artistic Director Maja Ardal with astute input from the other playwrights and intern dramaturge Beatriz Pizano and Audrey Dwyer. The process culminates in a workshop rehearsal of their work and a festival staged reading.
