Comedy and tragedy share an operatic stage when Golden Gate Opera presents two one-act Giacomo Puccini operas, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, two of the three operas from Il Trittico, which Puccini composed to be performed together. In Suor Angelica, Olga Chernisheva, who was brilliant in the title role of GGO?s 2004 production of Madama Butterfly, will sing the role of Angelica facing off against Mezzo-soprano Lisa Houston, who has performed with major opera companies throughout the western US, as the heartless Principessa. In Gianni Schicchi, baritone Paul Cheak, from the San Diego Opera and who performed in GGO?s productions of Madama Butterfly and Carmen, will sing the role of the scoundrel Schicchi and local Tiburon discovery, soprano Charlotte Nytzen (Santa Fe Opera) will sing the role of his daughter, Lauretta.
