Osher Marin JCC Celebrates Global Day of Jewish Learning with Joseph Telushkin. On Sun., Nov.7, Jews around the world will celebrate the Global Day of Jewish Learning to commemorate the completion of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz's Talmud translation and commentary - 45 volumes, 45 years in the making.

We will then hear a keynote speech by Joseph Telushkin on his new book, Hillel: If Not Now, When?, a provocative biography of one of the greatest rabbis of the Talmudic era and a figure of prophetic importance to today's world. Telushkin is the best-selling author of Jewish Literacy and The Book of Jewish Values, as well as 13 other books, is a senior associate of CLAL and the rabbi of the Los Angeles-based Synagogue for the Performing Arts. "What is hateful to you, do not do unto others. That is the whole Torah, the rest is commentary. Now go and study."

What makes this teaching of Hillel's so extraordinary is that he offered it to a Gentile seeking an on-the-spot conversion - and then converted him. Telushkin sees this as a model of openness that is needed today with unprecedented levels of intermarriage and assimilation.

Also taking place is a special session of the free program Family Connections, geared to families with children ages birth to 3 and their siblings. On Nov. 7th @ 9:30-11:30am, we will explore global Jewish family traditions through music, art, stories, cooking and parent education. This free session, open to families of all faiths, is sponsored by The PJ Library(R) of the SF Bay Area.

Rabbi Joseph Telushkin's appearance is co-sponsored by Congregation Kol Shofar and the Jewish Federation of SF, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. Tickets are $15 and $12 for members of the Osher Marin JCC and Congregations Kol Shofar and Rodef Sholom. The Center for Jewish Life, funded by the Koret Foundation and the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life, is dedicated to providing a range of adult Jewish learning opportunities to the greater North Bay community.
