Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore

Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, Empire Lyric Players presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s first blockbuster hit "HMS Pinafore or The Lass THMS Pinafore or The Lass that Loved a Sailor." Pinafore is among the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas, imbued with mirth and silliness to spare. The opera's gentle satire reprises and builds upon a theme from Gilbert and Sullivan’s previous work, “The Sorcerer”: Love between members of different social classes.

"HMS Pinafore" will be presented for six performances only on May 29, 31, June 1, 5, 7 & 8, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. at the Mizel Center for Arts and Culture, 350 S. Dahlia, Denver. Tickets are $18.00 Adult and $15.00 seniors 60 +. Information and tickets by calling 303-377-4831 or online at www.elps.org.

Inspired by Sister Mary Victor who directed Gilbert & Sullivan light operas at Holy Family High School, the Empire Lyric Players was organized in 1958 by Holy Family graduates and presented "HMS Pinafore" at the Denver Women's Club that year. The company moved to the Bonfils Theatre in 1959 and, with the support of Henry Lowenstein, performed G & S operettas until the theatre closed in 1986. ELP moved its annual production into the Shwayder Theatre at the Mizel Center for the Arts where it continues to perform.

The Empire Lyric Players is committed to preserving Gilbert & Sullivan's legacy and has the distinction of being one of the longest running groups of its kind in the country. Every year, more than 60 amateurs and professionals volunteer their time and skills in various capacities. Members are drawn from Denver and surrounding communities and represent many different professional, occupational, and educational backgrounds.
