For many, GENERATION P is the most important film to come out of Russia in 20 years. Adapted from the iconic bestseller by Victor Pelevin and directed by Victor Ginzburg (Restless Garden), GENERATION P is a rude, fantastic, epic, funny, timely dispatch about Moscow in the ’90s - ground zero for money, fashion, glamour, sex, terror and the brand driven logic which ended the Soviet Union and 75 years of Communism. The story follows poet-turned-copywriter Babylen Tatarsky (Vladimir Yepifantsev, Man from the East) as he journeys across the nascent landscape of 90s brand crazed, advertising in Russia and the shadowy Cult of Ishtar, whose acolytes control all parts of the media. Along the way, we meet digital politicians, Chechen gangsters, billionaires, anarchists, advertising gurus, digital politicians, Che Guevara and a chauffeur with a marked resemblance to Vladimir Putin, who is elected president of Russia…. A riddle, a farce, a romance about the ecstasy of disintegration in Moscow, GENERATION P is an obscene joke about the end of the world.

Though delivered in the rapid-patter style of a classic Thirties screwball farce, the mordant and ironic humor of GENERATION P has more in common with the metaphysical modernities of Williams Burroughs and Gibson. Set in the ground zero of gangster globalism and driven by a truly manic energy, GENERATION P is at once a comedy, a tragedy, and a documentary fantasy about the disappearing lines between above and below, government and business, legal and illegal, reality and its digital double.

GENERATION P received critical acclaim at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival where it played in the Vanguard Program. Other recent accolades include Special Jury Mention at the Karlovy Vary IFF, the Audience Award at “Sputnik Over Poland”, the biggest festival of Russian cinema outside of Russia. It was also selected as the opening night film of the London Russian Film Festival and received the Timeout London Critics’ Choice of the Week.
