Gendering Detail is doubly subversive: it turns contemporary Western concepts of ?traditional? art on its head and responds to current ideologies regarding the victimization of Muslim women and the homogenous voice of Islam.

?Tradition? is normally thought to be antithetical to the production of Western contemporary art, but art produced beyond the West often exhibits both values of the ?traditional? and the ?contemporary?. The four Pakistani women artists featured in Gendering Detail--all trained at the National College of Arts, Lahore in the 16th-century traditional techniques of miniature painting-- speak to their immediate circumstances as Muslims, as immigrants, and as displaced women.
