25th Anniversary Speakers Series ~ Gardens and Life Intertwined

The Education Committee is pleased to present special talks in celebration of our 25th Anniversary. Each talk will be followed by a lovely reception in the main house. Space is limited.

Botanical Patterns on English Transferware with Judie Siddall

Garden scenes, nature, and plants were common subjects on the print pottery of the 18th and 19th century. This talk will focus on the botanical patterns produced in the 19th century by Wedgwood, Spode, Minton, and other English transferware pottery makers. It will be illustrated by photos of transferware pottery decorated with botanical and floral prints, as well as the source prints from which they were copied. It will include a brief history of English transferware pottery manufacturing. As it is best to handle the pottery, some examples will be on display. The talk will also illustrate how a non-academic can use the Internet to do research on subjects of interest. Judie will also bring some books filled with examples you can browse through and several pieces available for purchase.

Judie Siddall was introduced to blue and white transferware pottery by her mother and grandmother, but did not buy her first piece until 1977. An addiction was born! In 1990, she was told by her husband, David Hoexter, that she either become a transferware dealer or stop collecting. This was when Merlin Antiques was born, named after Judie's favorite black and white cat. Judie always enjoyed studying transferware and sharing that knowledge with others, so in 1998 she founded the Transferware Collectors Club (TCC), along with Norman Wolf and Dave Arman. Judie has served as the TCC Vice President, President,
and is currently the Membership Secretary.
