Gamble Garden 25th Anniversary Speakers Series Presents Betsy Fryberger.

Walk through any nursery or garden center today and you can sample the native horticulture of six continents. But who were these botanist-explorers whose adventurous natures led them all over the world in pursuit of plants that still bear their names - Lady Banks roses, Douglas firs, fuchsias to name only a few common ones. Where did they find these exotic plants that we take for granted; how did they transport them and propagate them? And, let's not forget the more recent hybridizers, who have brought us many treasures. How did all these plants end up in our gardens? Betsy Fryberger will recreate the world of the golden age of botany with its plant explorers and with later refinements of hybridizers in a lecture and visual presentation.

Betsy G. Fryberger, McMurtry Curator of Prints and Drawings Emerita, recently retired from the Cantor Art Center at Stanford University, organized the exhibition The Changing Garden: Four Centuries of European and American Art. Its catalogue was selected by the New York Times as among the top books of the year on garden design. Her own small garden in Palo Alto reflects her interest in the history of plants and gardens from ancient times.

Following the talk in the Carriage House, there will be a reception in the Main House.
