New York City, New York 10012

In the early 1970s, a loosely defined community of artists began laying down the groundwork of an international visual language with world wide cultural appeal. It was in New York City?s South Bronx; the epicenter of this new cultural movement soon to be known as Hip-Hop, that the artwork can be traced back to. These walls and streets reflected the urban decay of its surrounding environment.

Hip Hop, now over thirty years old, has defined a generation. Artists from down the block and around the world heard the call of these pioneers of aerosol and stepped up to the front of the lines.

The Hip Hop culture in many ways is one based on proving you belong here too, that you can do anything they can do and that much better. It?s simply amazing how from it?s humble beginnings, Hip Hop has turned into a billion dollar lifestyle. Is that it ? is that the genius of the streets? Is that what getting over is all about? Has hip-hop ripped up its roots? Where in the world are we headed if we can?t get there in a Bentley?

Artists Karlos Carcamo and Nika Sarabi were schooled in the very fundamentals of this culture have dedicated a lifetime to its history and art form. They see Hip Hop as a vehicle of communication, a way to respond to static thought. Two congruent solo shows - Karlos Carcamo?s drawings & sculptures entitled Funky Cold Medina and Nika Sarabi?s paintings entitled A New Ism will open at Xanadu* in January 2005. This exhibition will tackle the previously mentioned core issues and questions and invite you reflect on a new culture of intellect.
