Byers-Evans House Gallery presents “Exuberant Absurdity/Intimate Immensity: The Photomontages of David Tippit”

DENVER- Exuberant Absurdity/Intimate Immensity: The Photomontages of David Tippit, will be on view in the Byers Evans House Gallery, located at 1310 Bannock Street in Denver, March 4 through April 30. A free opening reception will be held in the gallery during the Golden Triangle Museum District’s First Friday Art Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 4, in conjunction with the Month of Photography.

The Byers-Evans House Gallery is pleased to present a sampling of photomontages by David H. Tippit. Since the discovery of photography in 1839, photographs have been cut up and then recombined and interposed to create new photographic images that constitute a new visual display. The Victorians delighted in creating such new photographic creations and the Surrealist and Dada artists of the 1930s continued this tradition.

Now, David Tippit continues these strategies, with an astounding diversity of jarring images that are full of contradiction and layers of meaning. Tippet collects his images from old editions of LIFE Magazine, preferring those that were published in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. He selects easily recognizable images which he seamlessly pastes together creating marvelous new configurations. The works contain an astonishing diversity of jarring poetically and metaphorically rich images. Viewers will be delighted by the paradoxical, enigmatic and irrational world that they will visit when viewing these nonsensical but beautiful works.
