We are often told, "Go say something to her!" when a conflict situation is afoot. This "saying something" doesn't always lead to the clean resolution we had hoped for. Instead, it leads to a confrontation, hurt feelings, a hurling of insults...the list goes on. No wonder so many people avoid confrontations! Who wouldn't?

Take the practical approach -- have a goal and a plan to get there. Learn the keys to stating your concern in the best way possible, listening to the other person -- yes, that person has a viewpoint too -- and working out a solution that fits both of you.

Christine Silver is a trainer, coach, and management consultant with more than 15 years of experience in Human Resources.
