Friday Nights at the de Young: Cultural Encounters celebrates Artist-in-Residence-at-Large Tucker Nichols and "Masterpieces of Turkmen Weaving"
Friday, May 30, 2008, 5–8:45 pm

Meet Bay Area artist Tucker Nichols and view his new artwork at Friday Nights at the de Young on May 30. As Artist-in-Residence at Large at the de Young this spring, Nichols has been making work in and around the museum since January in a variety of media: unexpected photographs of the building; drawings on paper and photographs; and temporary interventions using tape and other everyday materials. His conceptual artwork offers a fresh look at the museum. There will be a reception for Nichols in the Kimball Education Gallery at the de Young from 6–8:30 (museum admission is not required to attend the reception). Light refreshments and a free publication will be available, and an “Artist Talk” segment at 7:15 pm presents Nichols in conversation with Griff Williams, owner of Gallery 16. Friday Nights on May 30 also features live music from 6:30 to 8:30 pm by Eliyahu & Qadim, presenting “Mystical Music of the Near East.” In the Koret Auditorium at 7 pm, the ADORNO Ensemble will premiere a new work titled Odes to Neruda. The work is a song cycle by Peruvian-American composer Gabriela Lena Frank set to the words of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Dinner and drinks are available in the de Young Café and the entire museum stays open until 8:45 pm on Friday Nights.
