Freedom on Our Terms Conference: Continuing the Battle for Women's Equality
The 1977 National Women's Conference in Houston was the first and only time the federal government authorized and financed a national gathering "to promote equal rights, equal opportunities and equal responsibilities for women." Thirty years after "The Spirit of Houston," many of the recommendations adopted at the Conference have still not been achieved, there have been no other such events held, and many people are totally unaware that the Houston Conference even happened. The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute and dozens of other women's and girls' groups are working to change that by convening a "Freedom on Our Terms" Conference on November 10-11th at Hunter College to reignite the fight for equality. "Freedom on Our Terms" will both celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the National Women's Conference and create a 21st Century Agenda for Action for women and girls. It is free for volunteers to attend and $7 for college students, but the general registration fee is $30.00, so if you can contribute more than the $7.00 the conference organizers would very much appreciate it.
