The first thing you should know about this class is that it will be easy, and it will be fun. If you've ever been frustrated trying to understand music, you'll have just the opposite experience; at the end of this class, you'll have a whole new understanding of how music is structured, and how logical music actually is. Music will suddenly make sense to you in a way you may never have imagined.

Music "theory" is actually not theoretical at all; it's an absolutely clear, logical set of relationships based on natural processes. I'll explain these relationships to you in simple, direct language.

Here's what we'll cover:

o What a "note" actually is
o How notes are different from each other, but also the same
o How notes form chords, based on consistent relationships
o Why chords make sense, based on physics
o What a "key" is, and how all keys are both the same, and different
o What a "scale" actually is, and how to construct any scale, in any key
o How all this relates to notated music, again in a completely clear, consistent way

We will do a bit of singing together, just to demonstrate some basic principles. The singing we do will be very simple, and you are not required to sing along. For most examples, I'll use a synthesizer to demonstrate.

We will not cover reading music, but once you've taken this short class, if you later want to learn to read music it will be much, much easier. For those who want to learn to read music, there will be at least two classes in the near future.
