About the night:

DJ Nick Luscombe's `Flomotion' has broadcast on numerous highly regarded radio stations, including Resonance FM, NME Radio, Samurai FM and XFM. In 2010, `Flomotion' celebrated 10 years as one of the UK's longest running weekly electronic music radio shows and highly successful regular live and club event, showcasing cutting edge live acts and DJ's in respected venues across London.

Beat Unique is a booking agency representing the best cutting edge electronic music acts and DJs, available for global live performances at bars, clubs, festivals and events. Each carefully chosen act on the roster is innovative, groundbreaking, unique, constantly evolving and above all, outstanding. Beat Unique also collaborates with artists outside the roster.

Flomotion Live and Beat Unique are proud to present two artists that have really captured our hearts and our feet recently.

Fresh from recording a brand new EP and a brilliant performance at London's 100 Club...we've fallen for Szjerdene big time...check the recent interview which was broadcast on Resonance 104.4fm recently, up on www.flomotionradio.com now. Tonight she is accompanied by her full band. We guarantee her set will leave you absolutely transfixed and wanting more.

Official Burnt Toast are an alt hip-hop outfit fusing elements of rock and jazz. Singer-songwriter Adrian Lawrence heading up the band with his poetry in motion rap, turns every day life observations into pure genius poetical commentary which will have you whooping with delight. They have burst upon the scene, wowing audiences from this year's Glastonbury Festival to the 12 Bar Club in Soho to The Green Door Store at the Beatabet night in Brighton. 100% guaranteed to get you groovin' and a movin'.

DJ and broadcaster (Resonance FM/ BBC Radio 3 Late Junction) Nick Luscombe is recognised as a long time supporter of new underground music through his many radio shows, mixes and live events.

DJ Nick Stroud (Jazznotjazz) will be dusting off his favourite 45s and bringing the good soul vibes from his previous sessions at the ICA and Big Chill Bar.

More about the acts:

Official Burnt Toast

Official Burnt Toast, a seriously groovin' alt hip hop act from London, are something else. Introducing...MC and chief Toaster Adrian Lawrence, Abrar “the general” Hafiz on bass, (a former member of Sona Fariq signed to Warner Music) and Patrick “DJ Dublab” Luke on bass, Bv's and technology, (a former member of a 90s act called The Sandmen. He now runs a label called Dublab).

MC Adrian Lawrence was born in Britain and spent his formative years in Canada, where he was equally exposed to music genres, ranging from classic jazz to classic rock and everything in between. He perfected his self-taught drumming skills by studying jazz drumming at the renowned Malaspina College in Vancouver Canada where his career as a drummer began. After years of success as a drummer, he diverged from drummer to poet. As an MC/toaster, Adrian is known as Official Burnt Toast, the product of an artist’s search for answers. Official Burnt Toast is the marriage of spoken word and infectious tracks guaranteed to both haunt and delight you.

Official Burnt Toast, the product of Adrian Lawrence’s detour through his own life, puts everything on trial and demands answers, newness becomes a demand and freshness the result of an artist seeking the truth...I make no apologies for such a poetic introduction there is simply is no other way to introduce a poet!

Adrian eloquently fuses the lethal observational skills of a Raymond Chandler detective with the subtleties and unsurpassed surgical spirits of a Martin Hannett production circa Joy Division and Section 25. The result is an infectious cocktail of American paranoia, Canadian objectivity and a very English obsession of introspection and the fly on the wall documentary.

Szjerdene

Born and raised in Hackney, 22-year-old Szjerdene (pronounced JhurDEEN) has quietly commanded the attention of music lovers, journalists and artists.

As Szjerdene’s musical taste evolved past pop (she cites Mariah Carey as her sole childhood inspiration), she found herself immersed into the world of jazz. “I fell in love with Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, and Dusty Springfield” she shares. Equally important were her fellow UK songstresses like Corrine Bailey Rae and Amy Winehouse. This mix of modern pop influences combined with yesteryear blues/jazz illustrates Szjerdene’s eclectic sound. “It’s old, but fresh…Very pure vocals and honest lyrical content”.

This purity is easily understood when Szjerdene divulges what inspires her the most: “Sounds, light, colours, space, time, nature, and silence. I enjoy nothingness—it’s just as important as sound. People take silence for granted.”

After graduating in 2010 from the University of Westminster with a degree in Commercial Music Performance, Szjerdene walked away with one important realization: “I would rather write my own material, and collaborate with artists spanning different genres/languages while making music that’s not always conventional to the commercial ear”.

And that’s exactly what Szjerdene set out to do when she reached out to Robin Hannibal of the Danish duo Quadron (Plug Research Music) to join forces. Hannibal was eager to work with the talented songstress. “She has ‘it’” he says of Szjerdene. “She isn’t the typical R&B singer. The way she phrases over a melody or chords…her voice dances like a feather in the wind”.

After breezing through two tracks together (the forthcoming “Lead the Way” and “If 6 was 8”), Hannibal introduced his Plug Research Music family to Szjerdene and the rest is, as they say, history. Szjerdene is currently working on her first official album release which she says will be “Conceptual, folk inspired, electronically manipulated, but pure sounds and vocals–A spectrum of my abilities in songwriting and arranging”.

With Szjerdene’s natural talent, global influences, and innovative sound – she’s not only gearing up for an impressive debut album – she’s out to redefine the formula for stardom.
