First American Woman to Walk in Space to Visit Science May 12, 2011

She has boldly gone where no American woman has gone before. Dr. Kathryn Sullivan is the first American woman to walk in space. Now the former astronaut with three space flights to her credit and a nomination to be NOAA’s Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation and Prediction is coming to the Science Museum of Virginia to share her experiences, love of science and cut the ribbon on the Museum’s new Science on a Sphere.
Dr. Sullivan has logged more than 532 hours in space during her three shuttle missions. Her space walk was on her first mission, her second mission deployed the Hubble Space Telescope. Here on earth, Sullivan accepted a presidential appointment as chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She has served as president and CEO of the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio, and now she is a nominee headed back to NOAA as one of its newest leaders.
