Firehouse Theater Company Presents

Sleuth

By Anthony Shaffer
Directed by Rick Bernstein

No one does "whodunits" better than the Brits! Mystery novelist and games-player Andrew Wyke, wanting to make sure that his estranged wife remains estranged, has invited her lover over for a friendly spot of gin. Or perhaps he merely wants to humiliate him for stealing his wife. What starts out as an innocuous round of cocktails develops into an intriguing multilayered contest that involves complicated and dark motives on each side.

Firehouse Theater Company presents “Sleuth” October 10 - November 8 at the John Hand Theater 7653 East First Place, Denver. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. with an Industry Night on Monday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 Friday and Saturday, $14 on Sunday and $10 on Monday, Oct. 27. Call 303-562-3232 for reservations.

Paul Page* stars as Andrew Wyke (*appearing courtesy of Actors’ Equity) with Chris Bleau as Milo Tindle in this classic thriller.

Winner of the 1971 Tony Award for Best Play, “Sleuth” is essentially a series of games being played between two complicated and intelligent adversaries, each trying to defeat and humiliate the other. Shaffer said the play was partially inspired by one of his friends, composer Stephen Sondheim, whose intense interest in games-playing is mirrored by the character of Wyke.

“Sleuth” had over 2,300 performances on London’s West End and opened on Broadway November 9, 1970 at the Music Box Theatre where it ran for 1,222 performances.
