The Lives of Others begins in East Berlini n 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin wall. The film traces the gradual disallusionment of Captain Gerd Wiesler, a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany's all powerful secret police. His mission is to spy on a celebrated writer ande actress couple, Georg Dreyman and Christa-Maria Sieland. Wiesler sets up his surveillance headquarters in the attic of Dreyman's apartment building, thus beginning the cold and calculating observation of the lives of the playwright and his girlfried. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 Academy Awards, The Lives of Others is an expertly crafted thriller with first class performances, direction and writing. A totally absorbing and captivating experience. In German with English subtitles.
