“I am a Tibetan. Buddhism is my philosophy. Heavy metal saved my life.” Shenpenn Khymsar’s life as a refugee from China’s occupation of Tibet took an interesting turn when he discovered both the vibrant underground music scene of Darjeeling, home to thousands of fellow refugees, and the joys of heavy metal. The result is a portrait of how refugees worldwide use music to address their plight and the story of one captivating individual who found salvation in power chords.

Shenpenn Khymsar will be attending the screening. Film to be shown with: “Made in China” (short doc about state restrictions on rock bands in China, directed by Javier Roberto Carlos, China/USA, 11 min.)
