Governor's Island
New York, New York

The Pure Project would like to present FIGMENT, a one-day
celebration of creative culture held on Governor's Island. We would
like to invite anyone interested to be a part of the festival to celebrate their
own work in conjunction with the talent of other artists in the
tri-state community.
Instead of a top-down curated, corporate-style event, it is an open and
participatory party for all people interested in creating and sharing.
All of the organizers and staff are volunteers, and the event will be
open and free to the public.

In detail, the mission for FIGMENT is to create a new kind of arts
event in New York--an event based on participation, rather than
observation. The art projects that will be solicited and sponsored by
the festival will be ambitious and interactive. They will include
visual arts, performance art, cutting-edge electronic art,
fashion/costuming, and participatory installations.

The underlying objectives of the festival are to build community among
artists and participants, to foster the participatory arts in New York
City, and to demonstrate a vision for the future of Governors Island
as an arts destination. The potential is to create a significant arts
attraction that spurs economic activity while strengthening New York's
position as the center of the arts world.

Basically, it is like a picnic, with art... an art festival in the
middle of New York harbor on a historic island with themed areas or
events being created by the participants. Activities can range
anywhere from a scavenger hunt or farcical competition, to teaching a
yoga class or ballroom lessons.

The Figment Festival is seeking any and all enthusiastic creators to
contribute content: puppetry, sculpture, costuming, dance, performance
art, installations, sound art, anything!

It will take place from 11am to 5pm on July 8th. Art and installations
can be set up as early as 10am, and in some cases may be able to be
brought to the island the day before. Participants can contact the Pure
Project for details.
