NOISE POP 2010

It seems that the past few years have been full of reunion tours and re-issues, and Sacramento, CA band FAR is a welcome addition to this trend. The band, which features Jonah Matranga (also of Onelinedrawing, New End Original), Shaun Lopez (The Revolution Smile), Jon Gutenberger (Two Sheds, Jackpot) and Chris Robyn, have come back in a big way, bringing their passionate and highly influential sound to the welcoming ears of long time fans, and new ones alike.

After a string of one off shows under the guise of Hot Little Pony, the band has since done a European Tour and a short run with Thursday. With a new album due out on Vagrant Records, Far has been keeping busy performing at benefit shows for Chi Cheng, bassist of The Deftones and longtime friend of the band, who is currently in a coma.

FAR first made a name for themselves in the late nineties in the Sacramento scene, often being praised for their heavy take on "traditional" emo stylings. Matranga's lush vocals blend perfectly with the pounding rhythms brought on by Robyn's drumming and Gutenberger's bass playing. Lopez, who is also a well respected studio engineer and producer, ebbs and flows on his guitar work, going from a light and airy background sound to an in-your-face assault of distortion. Their album, Water and Solutions, is often regarded as an influence on many of the popular indie/emo bands of the past ten years, and the band themselves are often named as one of the pioneers of the genre. Expect a bare-knuckle, no frills, dynamic night of music that will surely make you a fan.
