Experiencing the World through Music
Music is one of the strongest representations of a people’s heritage. The Skirball makes connections between peoples and cultures by presenting concerts that showcase
a variety of musical traditions, instruments, and styles. This course will provide expert background information on three styles of music being performed at the Skirball this fall: Argentinian accordion folk music, classical music of India, and Eastern European Jewish and Cuban music. Historians, musicologists, and musicians will present lectures and demonstrations prior to each of the concerts. By learning the history of the cultures and instruments represented, students will be able to appreciate the concerts on a deeper level. All participants in this course receive discounted admission to the Skirball concerts.

Instructors: Dr. Jonathan Ritter, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, UC Riverside; Betto Arcos, KPFK radio host; Dr. Robert de Groot, Educational Outreach Director at the
Center for the Science and Engineering ofMaterials, California Institute of Technology; and others to be announced.
