Expect Theatre presents the world premiere of
AWAKE
– an environmental theatrical experience exploring the inner world of
one of Canada's most violent, yet inspiring, 'hoods" –

July 6 - July 17, 2011
Walmer Road Baptist Church, 188 Lowther Avenue
Part of the Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival

Expect Theatre presents AWAKE, a theatrical experience like no other – a funeral and a celebration for those who have died at the hands of gang violence in Toronto. A site-specific theatre piece that takes place in a church, AWAKE fuses dancehall, hip hop, gospel music and theatre as it underscores the struggles, hopes and aspirations of those living in the troubled neighbourhood of Jamestown/Rexdale. AWAKE runs July 6 through to July 17 at the Walmer Road Baptist Church as part of The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival.

AWAKE is staged in the sanctuary of the Walmer Baptist Church and uses the funeral setting as a springboard to tell the stories of a broad range of people in Jamestown – from those who have risen above the most difficult circumstances to those who are still fighting for their lives to escape.

AWAKE is verbatim theatre, based on interviews with former and current gang members, cops, moms who have lost sons, and people who have been shot. What starts as a solemn affair becomes an examination, and celebration, of one of Canada's most dangerous yet inspiring 'hoods: Jamestown.
