The exhibition evokes the atmosphere of Antwerp between 1870 and 1935, a period of great economic expansion during which the city became one of the most important European emigrant ports. The focus in this history of Antwerp and of its port is on the Red Star Line, the shipping company which shipped millions of emigrants to the East River piers in the South Street Seaport and which also became renowned for its luxurious cruises later on. The work of painter Eugeen Van Mieghem is interwoven with and presented in the exhibition. He lived and worked during the same period and his artistic oeuvre - paintings and drawings - is incomparable when it comes to showing daily life in the port and the history of emigrants.
