Ethos food, music & fashion event caters to SoFla lifestyle

There is runway and then there is reality. And rarely do the two meet.

Until now ... with a series of catwalk capers spotlighting clothing we actually might wear here in the balmy subtropics.

Ethos, which is being billed as a three-day celebration of food, music and fashion, hits the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood this weekend.

"We really wanted to cater to South Florida," said Gregory Yap Sam, executive producer of the event. "No big ball gowns and no heavy jackets. It's resortwear, which is lifestyle clothing. When people ask me what that means, I tell them it's semiformal casualwear. It's not flip-flops and shorts."

Things to do in South Florida Ethos kicks off tonight with a champagne cocktail party for the American Heart Association's "Go Red For Women" campaign, which aims to raise awareness of heart disease.

The next two evenings feature a variety of designers showing everything from swimwear and lingerie to activewear and eveningwear. In all, 14 designers from Italy, France, Albania, Germany, England, Peru, Brazil, Jamaica and SoFla will participate.

"We checked with the Florida census and the tourism board and decided to do this in January because this is the time when we have the most highest number of international visitors," Yap Sam added.

"People come here from everywhere, from all over the world. And we have so many different cultures that already live here. It seemed a natural, and everyone jumped on board."
