The Summer Before the Dark by Doris Lessing

Novelist Doris Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007. Her novel, The Summer Before the Dark (1973), called one of her best works, explores the time in one woman’s life between youth and old age. As the summer begins, Kate Brown, a 45-year-old “happily enough married” woman with a house in the London suburbs and three grown children, has no reason to expect anything will change. By summer’s end, however, she has traveled to Turkey and Spain, found a new independence, and confronted her fears of growing older.
