PHIL KLINE's ZIPPO SONGS AND JOHN THE REVELATOR FEATURING LIONHEART, ETHEL, THEO BLECKMANN, TODD REYNOLDS & DAVID COSSIN

Called "brilliant" and "a true original" by the New York Times, Phil Kline has stretched the boundaries between contemporary classical, rock and ambient electronic music. Coupled with Rumsfeld Songs, Zippo Songs is Kline's statement on war and the politics of war, in a fresh and new take on the age old tradition of the protest song. A deeply moving, intense look at poetry American GIs inscribed on their lighters in Vietnam. Kline has set these profound and desperate poems with a calm and sacred spaciousness. With Theo Bleckmann, vocals; Todd Reynolds, violin; Phil Kline, guitars; David Cossin, percussion, Zippo Songs: Airs of War and Lunacy has just been released by Cantaloupe Music.

Commissioned by WNYC, Public Radio, John the Revelator is a new work by downtown music virtuoso Phil Kline. Based on concepts from the Bible's apocalyptic "Book of Revelation" and named after a song by blues legend Blind Willie Johnson, this work is a mass for the 21st century. Written specifically for the early music vocal sextet Lionheart and featuring New York's electrifying string quartet ETHEL.
