ABSTRACT: Philosophers not only think about what to do--nearly everyone does that--but we also think about how to think about what to do. There are numerous moral theories, and it is both interesting and useful to have multiple illuminating ways of categorizing them. Here I introduce four specific, mutually compatible ways to taxonomize moral theories. I discuss how we might improve upon current moral theories by deploying these new taxonomical schemes in our critical evaluations of the current options.





--- Eric Wiland (University of Chicago, 1997) works primarily on topics in ethics and practical reason. He investigates problems in practical philosophy by thinking about people who have various cognitive and motivational flaws, especially those who recognize that they have such flaws.
