DiverseArts is pleased to announce the return of the Notorious Lavelle White to Kenny Dorham’s Backyard as the headliner for June’s East End Fourth Fridays! Miss White, fresh from her performance at the Chicago Blues Festival, is a seasonal fixture at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard and was last featured at DiverseArts’ Ladies Sing the Blues on September 28th, proclaimed Lavelle White Day by the city of Austin. In a renowned career stretching from the 1950’s to the present day, Miss White has worked with B. B. King, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Smokey Robinson, as well as many others, and won numerous awards for her timeless, exquisite style. She in many ways exemplifies the programming mission of DiverseArts, looking back to Miss White’s contribution to the tradition of blues and soul, and forward by celebrating her as a contemporary artist and an innovator.

Also taking the stage is Austin’s own Bus Stop Stallions, playing white-hot funk and soul. Visit them on the web at www.yearofthestallion.com or at http://www.myspace.com/busstopstallions. Rounding out the entertainment for the evening is the Kenny Dorham Youth Jazz Workshop Jam, featuring some of Austin’s exciting young musicians.

This month and every month, children are welcome, with entertainment just for them at the East End Fourth Friday Kid’s Corner including a storyteller, free books, arts and crafts and entertainment courtesy of The Austin Children’s Museum. Come on down, enjoy the arts vendors, refreshments courtesy of Live Oak Brewery, and live music.

Austin’s East End Fourth Fridays! is a unique art and culture-driven monthly community-oriented event developed by DiverseArts to showcase the very specific cultural attributes and historical identity of Austin’s East End – the Soul in the heart of the City. Our goal is to bring together the many neighborhood artists and businesses, cultural, civic, commercial, and governmental groups in a monthly event designed to bring a relaxed open-air art and culture communal experience to the newly revitalized East End. It’s an open house in the East End and along East 11th Street. Sample food and drink at established and new venues, take in the headline concerts at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, check out art vendors, organizations, and sponsors doing PR and public outreach and bring the kids to enjoy the East End Fourth Fridays' Kid’s Corner. DiverseArts wishes to bring visitors from the neighborhood and the Austin area to see the unique and historic aspects of the historic East End. We hope to establish East End Fourth Friday as a holistic, community-based marriage of culture and commerce. Events start along the street at 5:30 PM and doors at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard (1106 E. 11th St., just East of the Victory Grill) will open at 6:00 PM, a donation of $5 to $10 is suggested.
