The Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) will kick off the LSA ChinaNow Theme Year at the University of Michigan by bringing the first ever university-sponsored dragon boat festival to Ann Arbor from 10–5pm on September 30 at Gallup Park. Asian Languages and Cultures, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Women’s Health, Arts at Michigan, Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Kinesiology, and the International Institute are among the various units on campus grabbing their seats and paddles for a water-spraying ride. Regional Chinese community organizations and foundations such as Shien-Ming Wu Foundation, Michigan Chinese Women’s Association, Chinese American Society of Ann Arbor, Michigan Taiwanese American Organization, and the Chinese Association of Greater Detroit are also on board. Donations to the festival allow teams of 20 to compete in double-headed races throughout the day. The festival is free and open to the public. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day by the river.
