When many artists think "life drawing," they think of sterile rooms, bad lighting, and bored, silent models with nary a hint of personality. Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School is the little New York art event that is changing all that.

Started in 2005 by artist and burlesque dancer Molly Crabapple, the concept is simple. Artists draw glamorous burlesque dancers, compete in contests and win wacky prizes. From its humble Brooklyn beginnings, Dr. Sketchy's now has 25 branches around the globe, including Hollywood, London, Tokyo, Rome and Melbourne.

It's also spawned a companion book, Dr. Sketchy's Official Rainy Day Colouring Book, by Crabapple and John Leavitt, published by Sepulculture Books. This adults-only colouring book is one part saucy activity book, one part DIY handbook, and one part history of Dr. Sketchy's first year. The Village Voice calls it "a hipster's wet dream", while the LA Times describe it as "smartly snarky" and New York's L Magazine praises it's "jovial yet biting Neo-Victorian wit."

Now, Dr. Sketchy's is taking over Atlanta. Hosts Will Lawless (artist and co-founder of Eyedrum) and Lori vanVoorhis (artist and performer - The Chamber,1150) have combed Atlanta to find the most beautiful burlesque dancers, delicious fetish models, spunkiest Rollergirls, and the the most rippling hunks of man. Catch the preview event at Sutra Lounge in Midtown, where the sassy Sapphire Swan of Big City Burlesque just might inspire you to greatness.

Dr. Sketchy's Atlanta preview takes place May 21, from 9:30-1am in the VIP room at Sutra Lounge in Midtown. Sutra is located at 1136 Crescent Ave. Tickets are 15$ for a reserved seat, 10$ at the door, and may be reserved by emailing [email protected].
