The Downey Rose Float Association was founded in 1952, prior to the incorporation of Downey. Our first entry was in 1913 and since 1955 we have continuously entered a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Downey's entry has the distinction of being one of the only six floats which come under the parade classification of self-built. This classification means our float is completely financed, constructed and decorated by volunteer contributions and help.

The Downey Rose Float Association's entry in the annual Tournament of Roses is a very real community effort! The float, from original design to completion, is well organized, thoughtfully executed and beautifully decorated. This is accomplished each year by men and women, young and old alike, working side-by-side, giving willingly of their time, talents, enthusiasm and efforts to make it all happen.

Our members are civic minded people from all walks of life, Doctors, teachers, merchants, engineers, lawyers, secretaries, bankers, accountants, students, housewives and retirees. They make up one of Downey's busiest service organizations. They are citizens that take pride in their City, with a desire to create interest and esteem for their community.

The worldwide publicity received by the City through participation in the Tournament of Rose Parade on New Year's day and the awards won have aided in establishing Downey as a desirable community in which to live, work and have a business.

This year-round effort keeps all of our volunteers very busy, young and old alike. Our youth learn new skills such as welding, floral design, construction, responsibility, and public relations. Our seniors are working and mentoring the youth at all the events. There is no generation gap in our group. Everyone is working side by side all year long building the beautiful entries each year.

I am a Downey resident and would like to learn how to build a float. I have experience with many tools including jig saw, skill saw, router, pad and circular sanders, many hand tools also. I own most of the tools listed above, too.

I would love to help.

Thank You,
Deborah L. Johnson
