Double Feature: Legacy (Legado) and Jubanos: The Jews of Cuba February 23, 2011

Mixing archival and contemporary footage with interviews and historical re-creation, Legacy (Legado) tells the story of the land grants that sought to rescue Eastern European Jews from the pogroms. Moisesville, the first Jewish settlement in Argentina,―is brought to life through the memoirs of a woman whose grandmother was one of Moisesville’s original settlers. (Argentina, 2001, 71 min. After centuries of immigration, Cuba was once the home of more than 20,000 Jews. Though religion was officially outlawed in 1961 after the Cuban Revolution, it was reinstated in 1991. As Jubanos: The Jews of Cuba reveals, for the 1,500 remaining Jews, this has been an opportunity to re-learn their traditions and find a new sense of community. (USA, 2010, 43 min. No MPAA rating.
