I saw this performance on 1/10/2009 at San Francisco War Memorial Opera House. I am a little disappointed with the performance. I personally think that it was over rated. Although it was not a bad performance, overall it’s just ok. It didn’t really hit a high note like all the glorious reviews that I read before we decided to give it a try.
First of all, the stage design is tedious. The digital screen that serves as a backdrop has tacky animation – little figures in motion! It was such a distraction when I tried to appreciate the dances. I have seen performances that use digital background; they can be done tastefully - very innovative and creative. What I saw tonight was immature multimedia; worse than a computer screen saver. The producer seems to want to have the backdrop integrate with the performers, but the visual effect was done so literally. It doesn’t enhance the performed pieces but was a distraction. During part II of the program, there was the “Legend of the Brush”; I was hoping to see some incredible calligraphy imagery in the set, but no. It would make the performance so much more artistic and have such impact if there was some animated calligraphy strokes on the screen. (Sorry, I sounded brutal about their stage digital design, but for those who saw the LOVE by Cirque du Soleil, you know what I mean.)
Secondly, I was expecting to see all these “spectacular, must see” costumes that were mentioned in most of the reviews I read prior to the show, but all I see is bad choices of color combinations. I understand that they are trying to portray the color themes of the centuries, but the wardrobe department should do a better job in choosing the colors.
It was a 3-hour long performance; at least 30 minutes were filled by the two masters of ceremonies – one speaks Chinese and one translates in English. They have a very commercial, soulless, trained voice and they almost read all you can read from the printed program. They came out prior to EVERY piece of performance. They tried to do some engagement with the audience, but it was just so empty and as fake as you can get. It almost begs for someone to put a stop to it. It interrupted the flow of the entire presentation. I much rather see all the pieces one after another. At some point, they remind me of watching TV and wanting to reach for the remote control to fast forward through the advertisements.
Last, I must give the credit to the live orchestra. If you like Chinese ancient melody and Chinese traditional instrumental music, they did a good job. I enjoyed the live music, but I left longing for a great performance. We enjoyed the male dancers performance better than the females. The male dances seem to be more passionate and expressive in their dancing and movements. At least a couple of the pieces that were performed by all male dancers stood out amongst the others.
I am sure there are many who enjoyed the show tonight. A few gave them a standing ovation. In my opinion, this is far off to warrant my standing ovation.
On a small note, I agree with some of the reviews here that pointed out that the performers were sending religious beliefs and political messages during the presentation. It is a little turn off for me too. I pay top dollars to see this performance, I would prefer it is pure art, rather than see a mixture of art than religious beliefs and political points of view.
