Discover The Secrets of Chawton's Historic Gardens May 5, 2009

Garden-lovers are being invited to follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen.
Alan Bird, who is Head Gardener at the restored Elizabethan mansion that was once home to Jane Austen's brother, will lead a tour of the gardens surrounding the house and talk about their history and conservation. He will also explain the organic methods that are now being used at Chawton House to cultivate flowers and vegetables.
Jane Austen was a frequent visitor to the Great House, as it was known then, and took a great interest in the gardens.
Tea and cake will be served in the Old Kitchen following the tour, which starts at 2pm.
