Ever wanted to know why women are underrepresented in computer science and other STEM fields? STEM is science, technology, engineering and mathematics. AAUW Seattle presents a program to offer some clear answers.

Dr. Sapna Cheryan and her students will present research on how stereotypes of computer scientists contribute to women's lower interest in the field and how to change these stereotypes to increase participation. This will be a fun look at this interesting and often overlooked subject.

We are fortunate to have this talented and creative speaker. Sapna Cheryan received a NSF CAREER award, the National Science Foundation's most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

She is also the author of numerous articles, the latest of which is "Ambient belonging: How stereotypical environments impact gender participation in computer science," with Plaut, V.C., Davies, P., & Steele, C.M., in press for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Event includes breakfast and program. You do NOT have to be a member to attend.
