David Hilliard is a life long activist and one of the first members of the Black Panther Party, later becoming the chief of staff of the organization. His arrest in January,1968, for passing out leaflets at Oakland Technical High School is a legendary moment in the history of the liberation movement. When Huey Newton was arrested in September, 1968, Hilliard took over the command of the BPP. In 1993, Hilliard joined Fredrika Newton in establishing the Huey P. Newton Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization that provides community-based programs, including literacy, voter outreach and health-related components. The following year he published his autobiography, This Side of Glory (1994).

"The Zimmermen," named 2005 Writer Laureates by the San Francisco Friends of the Library, had their first bestseller in 2000 with Hell?s Angel: The Life and Times of Ralph "Sonny" Barger and the Hell?s Angels Motorcycle Club. This fall, Simon & Schuster is publishing Mythbusters, based on the popular science television show.
