When a musician appears on more than 150 records over 25 years and is named "one of the 25 best of all time" on his instrument, can anything still be challenging?

"For me, any song is challenging," says Dave Weckl. "To get all the parts I want to play, to get the sound and feel I am after...it's always a challenge."

Weckl's band released its fifth studio album - "Multiplicity" - the ninth overall for Weckl as a solo artist, on July 12, 2005. According to Weckl, there are plenty of challenges for the legendary drummer.

"On this record, the one in particular that was a bit challenging was Steve Weingart's composition "Cascade." It's a very bright 12/8 feel, but light, so a lot of 'touch' was involved," added Weckl.

"Multiplicity" features a diverse lineup of nine songs that highlight the writing talents of Weingart, Meek and Weckl, who spent many hours together in Weckl's studio composing most of material. But the performance talents of all the band members shine through on this album.

"I'm very excited about this new CD," Weckl says. "I had much more involvement in the writing process than on "Perpetual Motion," so it was very gratifying. With the inclusion of percussion (Richie Garcia) and rhythm guitar (Paul Pesco), there is a lot going on with different textures and sounds. Bassist Ric Fierabracci, who played with the Chick Corea Elektric Band for many of its recent shows, also appears on the record, complementing long-time Weckl Band bassist Tom Kennedy.

Of course, Dave Weckl Band fans will appreciate Weckl's extremely diverse style, with signature polyrhythms and tight syncopations dynamically blended with open grooves and plenty of feel.

With Weckl behind the sound board in his home studio, "The Garage," "Multiplicity" also delivers on a sonic level. Says Weckl, "with upgrades in the recording gear department, I'm also very excited about the 'sound' of this CD. I feel it's one of our best efforts overall to date." Weckl has also been behind the board for Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez's upcoming follow-up record, "Italuba 2."
