Dance to ZE Beat: A Monthly Post Punk Dance Party & Movie Night. Celebrating the short lived era from the late 70s to early 80s primarily in New York City where musicians such as James Chance, Lydia Lunch & Suicide and filmmakers such as James Nares, Eric Mitchell, & Amos Poe ruled downtown nightlife, often wandering on to each other's stages, screens, and canvasses. Showcasing the sounds of the dancier side of no wave on record labels including: ZE Records, 99 Records, Sleeping Bag, Y Records, Celluloid, Les Disques Du Crepuscule, Factory, & Rough Trade.
Screening in the background:

RED ITALY, directed by Eric Mitchell. (1979, 55 min.) Second feature film by the French-born director is a Bertolucci-style story of a bored, rich woman looking for romance and adventure. She meets an American G.I., dumps him, then falls for a Communist worker. Stars Jennifer Miro, Harald Vogl, Patti Astor, John Lurie, and Mitchell himself in a b/w evocation of the post-war nightclub scene. (Includes Mitchell-directed Squat Theater short "A Matter of Facts.")

CAVE GIRLS (1982, 28 min.) A tape by collaborating women artists who develop a pre-thought fantasy of a prehistoric culture of women. Rife with home-made exoticism, this well-received piece verges on the grand themes of female identity. Kiki Smith & Ellen Cooper conceived this post-feminist work, dancer Cara Brownell produced "Cave Girls", and it includes music by the Bush Tetras and Y Pants.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING?
Flavorpill:
The small galaxy of strange attractors — art stars, noise-damaged musicians, mutant-disco producers, and guerrilla filmmakers — that made up the downtown New York scene in the late '70s and early '80s still holds a fascination for those born decades too late to crash the party. DJ Tristes Tropiques' new monthly shindig resurrects the sounds of the era, culling dance-floor-friendly fare from labels like ZE, Sleeping Bag, and 99 Records. On the decks tonight are recent Bay Guardian 2008 Hot Pink List nominee and Honey Soundsystem regular Josh C. and KUSF's Nicole G. Cinephiles take note: rare films by Kiki Smith and Eric Mitchell are also screened. [Info Source]
