Artist Statement
by Xuan My Ho
Very often, curved and non-linear shapes are found throughout my work. I use rough and durable materials, such as ceramic, tiles, stained and fused glass, stones, pebbles, and curvatures enhance the contrast and bring the softness to the design as a whole. I use the hard materials to paint my mosaic pieces, however, using mosaic materials is quite different from using a brush to paint on canvas.
My subject matter often originates from my imagination inspired by my surroundings, such as the soft flow of a woman's hair, either blowing in the wind or naturally laying against her curvy figure. This really does capture my imagination. The graceful shapes, forms and colors in my pieces also reflect the beauty of nature such as the earth, the sky, the mountains and waterscapes. I like to take on the design challenges of using a wide variety of shapes; my body of mosaics includes two and three- dimensional pieces of many shapes and sizes.
