Cult Maze provides “a parcel of hooks and catchy refrains, sinuous guitar and synth lines, curious words or phrases that pop” bundled up with an energetic delivery that lacks neither complexity nor flourish. Modern Syndrome is the band that Portland has been talkng about for sometime now, mostly because of their youthfulness (they’re just about old enough to drive, we hear). But really they’re a fantastic indie band that plays like they mean it without apologising for their influences (Neil Young, Pavement, The Walkmen, Lil’ Fighters, Yo la Tengo) showing. The Jaguar Club is a Brooklyn pop trio that’s about a year old and cites The Smiths, Talking Heads, New Order and The Chameleons as infludences.
