A resident dance company at Dance Place, Coyaba Dance Theater performs Destiny, which focuses on Artistic Director/Founder Sylvia Soumah’s drive to transform and rule her destiny. “There have been many life-altering changes in my life that have put me on the path that I am on now, “ says Soumah, “I’ve heard it said that ‘a wise man travels in order to inspire changes in his life,’ for me, it was the opposite. The changes in my life inspired me to travel and soar.” Through both traditional and contemporary forms of West African dance and music, Coyaba’s dancers and drummers demonstrate Soumah’s determination to empower herself and inspire others to transform and rule their own destinies.
