Conversations with Artists: Brett Cook and Jeff Chang on Kehinde Wiley, Portraiture, and the Hip-Hop Diaspora May 10, 2013

Artist Brett Cook and award-winning journalist Jeff Chang (Can’t Stop Won’t Stop) discuss the changing perspectives on contemporary portraiture and the art of the hip-hop diaspora in relation to Kehinde Wiley’s work, currently on view in the exhibition The World Stage: Israel.
Brett Cook is an artist, community activist, and educator. His recent projects include the exhibition Red, Black, and Green: a blues (2011) at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts, the Walker Art Center, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Other major exhibition venues include the National Portrait Gallery (2007) and the Philadelphia Department of Recreation Mural Arts Program (2004).
Jeff Chang is an American journalist and music critic on hip-hop music and culture. His 2005 book, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, which chronicles the early hip-hop scene, won an American Book Award in 2005.
