In the 1980s Cromer attended Columbia College Chicago and later taught acting and directing there until 2008. After teaching, he moved to New York to produce the musical adaptation of The Adding Machine (2008), which received six Lucille Lortel Award nominations and won for Outstanding Musical.

This year, he will direct Broadway revivals of The House of Blue Leaves with Ben Stiller, Edie Falco, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, opening in April; and The Sweet Bird of Youth with Nicole Kidman, scheduled for this fall.

Cromer was named as one of the 2010 MacAuthur Fellow’s for his achievements as a theater director and actor. As a fellow, Cromer is viewed by the John D. and Catherine T. MacAuthur Foundation as a talented, creative artist who shows promise in the continuation of his work in his field.

Currently living in New York City, Cromer has spent most of his career in Chicago. Some of his local directing credits include: A Streetcar Named Desire, Picnic, The Price, and Oscar Remembered at Writers Theatre; Cherrywood, Mojo, and The Hot L Baltimore at Mary-Arrchie Theatre; A Perfect Mendacity, The Dazzle, Orson's Shadow, and Golden Boy at Steppenwolf; Come Back, Little Sheba at Shattered Globe; and Angels in America, Parts 1&2 at The Journeymen.
