New York is often imagined as a perennially new city, yet in the four decades since the 1965 passage of the New York Landmarks Law, it has become one of the strongest forces for historic preservation in the country. To date, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, the agency in charge of identifying and protecting our architectural resources, has designated 1,235 individual landmarks, 110 interiors, ten scenic sites and 96 historic districts, including the five showcased in this exhibition.
